7 Tips For Cooling & Savings
1. Clean Air Filters Make A World Of Difference
Dirty air filters make it challenging for your AC to keep you and your family cool, not to mention, the additional wear & tear and operating costs due to the restricted airflow. It’s important to know what is the best air filter to use and how often to replace it. For expert advice on filter selection, check out our video.
2. Use “Auto” Mode For Your HVAC’s Fan
On the thermostat, put your fan position into the “auto” mode. If it is in the “on” position, your fan will continuously circulate your cool conditioned air throughout your home. While it’s doing that, it will pick up heat from your attic and slowly heat your home up. That’s the exact opposite of what you want! This won’t happen if your fan is in “auto” mode. For air circulation throughout your home, operate ceiling fans instead.
3. Keep Landscaping Debris Away From Your Outdoor AC Unit
Take a few minutes to remove debris away from your outdoor unit...grass, twigs, branches, & leaves are culprits for blocking the airflow and when that happens, your AC can’t provide you with cool air as effectively as it normally could. If it’s blocked for too long, your AC may totally fail! Picture removing debris as helping your unit breathe more easily.
4. Pay Attention To Your Doors & Windows
Unsealed doors and windows let cool air seep out…when running your AC, ensure that they’re totally shut. If you have any leaks, caulk and weather stripping may do the trick. You can even stop some sunlight heat from entering your home by using things like window screens, window films, or solar screens. Also, closing your blinds or curtains will have a similar effect.
5. Minimize Tasks That Create Heat
You can drop the temperature in your home by reducing activities that create heat. You don’t have to make these changes all the time, but every now and then helps:
- Instead of turning on your dishwasher, handwash dishes.
- Give your clothes dryer a break and put your laundry on a drying line outside.
- Enjoy the summer past time of grilling outside instead of using your stove.
6. 78 Degrees Is The Magic Number
When you’re at home, don’t set your thermostat below 78° - this will help reduce cooling costs. The Energy Star program, run by both the DOE & the EPA, states that 78° is a good thermostat setting for energy-efficiency during summer weather. If you’re concerned this setting isn’t cool enough for comfort, operate ceiling fans throughout your home and keep your blinds and curtains closed to block the sunlight.
7. Add 5 Degrees When You Leave
Traveling or going to work for the day? Simply raising your thermostat up 5 degrees will reduce your AC’s workload and help to cut those energy costs. When you get home, coming back down 5 degrees won’t be very stressful for your AC.
