SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and it’s a measure of how much energy your air conditioner or heat pump uses to cool your home. The higher the SEER rating, the higher your system’s efficiency. The updated SEER2 standard requires all new air conditioners and heat pumps installed after January 1, 2023 to meet a more rigorous efficiency requirement, and for the first time those requirements are different depending on where you live. For all of us here in the Phoenix, AZ area, that means all new units installed must have a minimum SEER rating of 15.
How Will It Affect You?
Most of the time your air conditioner hums along and you don’t even need to know its efficiency rating. But if you have an older unit that needs replacing, this change could have a big impact on your bottom line. Units meeting the newer standard have the latest and greatest in energy efficient technologies, but that high technology comes at a higher price. So if you’ve been thinking of replacing your unit, now might be the best time - you can still get an energy-efficient unit, but with the lower standards it will come with a lower price.
